@annayaam.med Can I tell you a secret?
🌼
I've cried because of this job more than I'd like to admit.
🌼
🌼
🌼
Yesterday was a shift full of emotion for me. First, I heard that another rig in my area had a case of pediatric CPR, reminding me own cases - which are extremely rare, and yet I've taken part of three.
Later, I arrived in the ER and spoke with a nurse who thanked me for my help doing CPR on an 18 year old recently. Unfortunately, none of those cases ended well.
🌼
All ended up with me - frustrated, upset, even guilty.
🌼
I know I did my best - but what do you do when your best isn't enough to save your patient?

@annayaam.med One last week of work before going back to school.
⚕️
While working as a paramedic is incredibly difficult (physically, mentally, emotionally), I truly love it.
⚕️
I so appreciate my bosses for letting me come back every time I'm in Israel and helping me support my education.
⚕️
I'm tired but my heart is full and I'm excited for this next year.

@annayaam.med Did a thing.
•
When I turned 17, I donated blood for the first time.
•
Unfortunately, being a vegetarian I continuously had low hemoglobin almost every time I wanted to donate (which was a lot) so I've only been able to donate a handful of times since then.
•
Yesterday I was lucky enough to have sufficient hemoglobin, a good blood pressure reading and some time off from work (we're not allowed to donate while working).
•
My blood type is 🅰️➕. What's yours?

@annayaam.med My job is quiet.
🖤
Weird, right? Sounds counterintuitive, what with the sirens, the honking cars, the screams of a patient in pain or worse, the screams of a patient's loved one, also in pain.
🖤
But my job? It's quiet.
🖤
You'll rarely hear me raise my voice, and if I do, it's usually to quiet the people who are screaming.
🖤
When I get to a scene, everything becomes quiet.
My only focus is the patient, and trust me when I say - yelling rarely makes me treat a patient better.
I need to hear what happened.
I need to hear their complaints.
I need to hear their lungs.
I need to hear my monitor.
I need to hear the defibrillator charging, ready to shock.
I need my team to hear my orders.
🖤
My job? It's quiet.

@annayaam.med ⁦✌🏼⁩nd year of med school is fast approaching, and I'm waiting anxiously for my class schedule to be published (#nerdalert 🤓) They say that med school is like drinking from a fire hydrant 🌊, and that's true both of the amount of material covered and the amount of courses.

In my first year of med school, I had an average of 9️⃣ courses per semester, where 3️⃣ are the main, intense ones and 6️⃣ were languages, philosophy, first aid, etc.

@annayaam.med Is it weird that I miss this? 💀Anatomy was one of the subjects I didn't know how to approach.
The first semester, I was completely lost🗺️.
I tried, but quickly gave up 🤷🏼‍♀️ when I couldn't find a method that worked for me. I did only the bare minimum 👌🏼 to feel like I was doing ~something~.
A week 🗓️ before our first exam, I suddenly realized what I'd done (or - what I hadn't) and broke down crying in a massive panic attack 😓.
The very next day, @galrosen2 was already 👨🏽‍🏫 teaching me everything. For a week straight, I only 👩🏼‍💻 studied, 🤔 thought and 💭 dreamt about anatomy. I was lucky to have him for support as a boyfriend👩‍❤️‍👨, but also as a colleague 👫.
He helped me find a way for anatomy to start making sense.
I very luckily passed that first exam.✅ Since, I haven't let myself procrastinate on anatomy 🙅🏼‍♀️. I know it's an important subject and I know it's part of the basis for understanding the physiology and pathologies 🤒 to come.
And now, I miss this. I miss our weekly meeting for anatomy and lunch🍝, and am excited that in 3️⃣ weeks I get to go back and hustle for one last semester 💪🏼

@annayaam.med #Biochemistry 🔬 was my favorite course from last semester.
Whiteboards were undoubtedly my favorite study tool last semester.

Here's how I used whiteboards for #biochem:
📋 Drawing out pathways✏️. This was always from memory and a perfect example of active recall.
📋 Drawing out specific mechanisms 🔬 i.e. salivary amylase breaking down starch, glycogen breakdown
📋 Drawing out the chemical structures! ⚗️ My school was big on us remembering every single formula for each intermediate so I worked hard to remember them all 🔢. Also active recall.
📋 Teaching my colleagues! 👩🏼‍🏫Learning by teaching is one of the best ways to solidify material.
📋 Finding connections. I'd make big tables of the different 🔄 cycles / pathologies 🤒, then change colors etc. to signify similarities.
📋 One of my favorite things about whiteboards is that they help reduce waste ♻️. While I saw many classmates using paper 📃, and while I'm not perfect at being #wastefree, I do try my best to reduce and live #sustainably when possible 🌿

What have you used whiteboards for?

@annayaam.med Studying during school breaks:

TBH, this summer I studied a total of ✌🏼 times.

During the school year, however, I had 3️⃣ breaks for a total of 5️⃣ weeks off.
The school year breaks were usually right before exams so while I was in my home country to rest 💆🏼‍♀️ (a bit) and work ⚕️ (a lot), I still had to find time to study.
🤦🏼‍♀️It was very hard for me to study, as I was out of my regular routine, had no desk, and had to see family and work.

My tips for staying on top of schoolwork during a break: 💠 Study during car 🚗 rides! Anki was essential for this, I diligently spent even 10 minute car rides to quickly go through cards.
💠 Same for the flight to and from Israel 🛫🛬
💠 At work, I was very lucky to have breaks. I would study while I ate and watch (educational) YouTube or @onlinemeded videos on my way to calls 🚑
💠 At home, 🏡 I

@annayaam.med My doctor called me yesterday.
My amazing, wonderful family physician called me yesterday just to see how I was doing. My government provided, NON-privatized physician.
•
See, last time I was in her office I cried.
Last time I told her how hard the first year of med school was on me emotionally, mentally, physically.
I asked for help.
She provided it.
•
And 5 weeks later my one of a kind, beautiful human of a doctor called me, just to check up.
•
This is the type of physician I want to be.
The one that makes patients feel seen and understood and cared for.
The one that goes the extra mile.
The one that truly changes lives.

@annayaam.med For 1️⃣0️⃣ years, my mother did not want me to become a doctor.

My mother became a nurse the same day that I was born 🤱🏽, nearly 25 years ago. Her experience with doctors was not positive. She stopped working 5 years and 2.5 kids later, when my brother (pictured) was in the making 🤰🏽 and we were in the process of moving to the United States 🌍. When I was 1️⃣2️⃣, I realized I wanted to be a doctor, and for ten years all I heard from her was:

@annayaam.med If you look closely you can see that I just had my blood drawn💉

This is after nearly two years of not taking proper care of myself, medically🤒. It's borderline ridiculous how my friends and I just ignore our own medical woes while in medical school.

Just in the first year, I had:
📌 Weight gain
📌 Parasthesia in my thigh
📌 Back pain so bad I couldn't sleep
📌 Migraines
📌 Sprained my ankle (*2)

The fact that my med school is in Europe 🌍 (and not my home country 🇮🇱) definitely didn't help matters, but mostly it comes down to the fact that I simply didn't 🙅🏼‍♀️ take good enough care of myself. ✨I vow not to make the same mistake again. This year, I will prioritize my health, both physical and mental✨

@annayaam.med Honestly, I probably cried a couple hours before or after this picture was taken.

It's hard to admit how difficult medical school actually is.
It's hard to admit that while it's a dream come true, it's also a bit of a nightmare.

For all of you starting med school this year:
✨ It's okay to ask for help. I did. It took me too long.
✨ It's okay to not be the best. You only need to do your best.
✨ It's okay to need to change your study habits. Med school studying is *different*.
✨ It's okay to have a hard time adjusting to a new school/city.

If you have a few hard days, don't give up💪🏼. Remember your

@annayaam.med I'm not good at doing nothing.🙅🏼‍♀️ Don't get me wrong, I'm a total sloth who loves to sleep 💤, eat comfort food 🍿 and binge a good TV show📺. The thing is, I usually squeeze them in between work and studying.
Having 3️⃣ whole days off is a bit unnerving, mostly because I decided I'm:

@annayaam.med 2️⃣3️⃣5️⃣ hours later, I get nearly 3️⃣ whole days off of work until a new month 📅 is under way.
Working as a paramedic 🚑 is intense and very trying - mentally, physically, emotionally🙍🏼‍♀️.
Yesterday I read @er.doc.mom 's post on pediatric airway emergencies. I was very lucky during my training to work with anesthesiologists who allowed me to intubate babies👶, making me familiar with the procedure and able to perform it during when necessary in the field.

Even with all that training, the experience of a pediatric intubation (esp. in an emergency 🚨🚨🚨 situation) is a scary one. As Samuel Shem said in his book, The House of God,
