Over the past several weeks, I’ve been learning, growing, writing everything down like a mad woman, asking my coworkers for advice and help, alllll the things! No longer having a preceptor will be scary but something I LOVE about Nursing is that everyone working your shift is still a resource for you! You’re never alone and at some point, you begin to trust yourself more and more 🤗 I’m so ready to take on all the mama’s and babies out here in North GA 😜 Have no fear going into school, orientation, work, anything..because time fixes all things y’all! You can do anything you set your mind to! Happy Friday ♥️😊🙌🏽

@lifewithleenrn The learning never ends! Even after school 🏫 This week, I took NRP class! NRP stands for “Neonatal Resuscitation Program” and ya girl is now licensed! In this course, I learned all about ABNORMAL deliveries and situations where we have to give the little babies some will to live. 🙌🏽 We start by drying them, stimulating them, suctioning, and move into PPV (positive pressure ventilation) which is where the blue ambu bag comes into play! The baby laryngoscope is for securing an airway in the most serious of situations which I hope I never see 🙃 How do you guys feel about your certification classes? CPR? PALS? NRP? Let me know how you felt doing yours in the comments! I loved my class and gained a little more confidence in my nursing skills 😊🙌🏽 Happy Thursday friends!

@lifewithleenrn Dreams do come true | Back in Nursing school, my fiancé and I worked our butts off. We kept repeating “soon school will be over and we will work only 3 days a week! We can do this!” In the least negative nancy way, I want to say Nursing has brought us a whole new set of challenges. The exhaustion, alternating schedules, feelings of inadequacy, anxieties, and more that beginning our careers has brought us has been just as challenging as school. However!!! I think over the past few years, school has taught us resilience and how to keep going when you don’t feel like it. That is the heart of Nursing! So keep pushing my friends. One day, all you’ve been working towards will be in front of you and you will morph into this person that ‘nursing school you’ would be so proud of 🦋 Soon you’ll be doing it all. Dreams do come true ✨ Love, your self proclaimed favorite RN couple 😉

@lifewithleenrn Postpartum Nursing: So many of you have asked me what I do at work! Is Mother-Baby Nursing for you? Let me know below! Here are some of my daily duties:
⁣
1. Assessments of Mom and Baby! ⁣
Assessing fundal tone, ensuring mom isn’t developing clots or infections, VS, etc. ⁣
Baby’s assessment includes VS, fontanels, sacral dimple closure, normal abdominal tone, and reflexes, facial symmetry, and more!⁣
⁣
2. Feeding Baby 🍼🤱🏼 ⁣
As a MB nurse, we round on all our patients every 2 hours and document feedings! Bottle or breast? How many mL’s/minutes? Does mom need breastfeeding assistance, that’s us 🙋🏽‍♀️ We’re all about getting our babies the nutrients they need and assisting in all feeds if the infant is a poor feeder. Blood glucose checks without an order is even within our power thanks to protocol. All of this is to ensure the infant is well fed and healthy!⁣
⁣
3. Mom’s toileting 🚽 ⁣
Nothing increases bonding like crawling in a tiny bathroom with a postpartum mom! As a MB nurse we provide comfort items such as pads, panties (that look like diapers), witch hazel rounds, numbing spray, spray bottles for warm water, and ice packs to provide relief to a postpartum mother’s bottom. Seeing a mom go from uncomfortable to changed, clean, new gown, etc. is one of my favorite parts of the job! Mom deserves to feel glam after delivery 🙇🏽‍♀️ ⁣
⁣
If you’d like to know more about what we do, drop a baby related emoji in the comments and a part 2 may be coming your way soon! ⁣
⁣
Happy Tuesday my insta peeps🤗💕⁣ (and yes, I had patient permission for this photo that she took and sent me).

@lifewithleenrn In case you haven’t heard this in a minute: Instagram is a highlight reel. I’m smiling for this picture but behind the scenes, I’ve been struggling with what to post since becoming a nurse. Honestly-I’m out of my comfort zone. I was comfortable being a nursing student..nursing is a whole different story. I struggle with confidence because all of a sudden I’m on the bottom of the totem pole again and I DONT know it all to share it on here with you. I just wanted to be real and tell you that from the bottom of my heart, I want to help. But as of right now, I feel just as scared, tired, and overwhelmed as any other student or nurse! Never assume anyone escapes those feelings- Instagram is a just 👏🏽 a 👏🏽 highlight 👏🏽 reel. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Feel free to drop some encouragement in the comments to spread happiness because at the end of the day that’s what I aim to do here. Mine for you is KEEP GOING and work hard. Things won’t always be difficult; everyone starts somewhere ✨ Happy Monday friends, we’re all figuring life out together ♥️

@lifewithleenrn Finally.....I have worked so hard for these two letters. I will never forget the three grueling years full of illness, stress & anxiety.. but I’m pumped I’ll wear this reminder for every day of my adult life to show me anyyyything is possible!
⁣
Another thing i’ll always wear is my RhinoShield Apple watch case because as a new grad I’m literally running everywhere wacking my wrists on every possible surface 😂 I chose these colors; all cases come with the same color rim-or you can switch it up like I did with my grey/yellow combo!
⁣
If you don’t wanna crack your screen and be sad, you can use AYLEEN10 for 10% off your order! If you’re interested, check out my story for a link😍 @rhinoshield is da bomb!!! ⁣

Happy hump day y’all🤩 If you’re in school, know one day it’ll be your name followed by RN!!!!🙌🏽

@lifewithleenrn Hearing screens of the newborn 👶🏼 We test each newborn with the OAE exam (otoacoustic emissions) to test their hearing! ⁣
⁣
To perform an OAE test, an OAE screener with a probe is needed. The probe is placed into the patient’s ear canal and plays a sound to the ear. ⁣
⁣
The device measures the sound that comes back and the results are displayed on the screen of the OAE hearing screener. If the device detects OAEs, the result is displayed as “Pass”. If no response is detected, the result is a “Refer” which does not necessarily mean that there is a hearing loss present. ⁣
⁣
“Refer” means that further tests are needed to verify if a hearing loss is present. ⁣
⁣
Now take a guess: do you think babies like or hate this little test... 😂 Drop your guess below 👇🏽

@lifewithleenrn Hindsight is 20/20; here are some things I wish I could’ve told myself when I started Nursing School: ⁣
⁣
❣️If there’s a big concept that overwhelms you for you next test- do NOT back down and hope there’s few questions about it. Tackle it first and don’t procrastinate. Read about it, talk to your professors about it for clarification. Get! After! It!⁣
⁣
❣️Don’t compare yourself to others. Nothing else to this one. ⁣
⁣
❣️ Kiss your social life goodbye haha, you’ll be growing up in these 2 years. Be honest with yourself about what “doing your best” really means and pride yourself in excellence.
⁣
❣️Get some @pixeleyewear glasses for all the late nights you’ll spend on Kaplan/Hessi/ATI/etc. Trust me, you need the sleep after those nightmarish homework assignments! ⁣

@lifewithleenrn HEYO! Back at it with some baby facts! This time with metabolic screenings! I don’t want to be a textbook with these fact posts so I’m going to tell you what I know/learn. Keepin it real out here y’all 😂 here we go:
⁣
⭐️ Every baby has a metabolic screen done at 24 hours of birth. ⁣
⭐️ The metabolic screen tests for rare but potentially serious disorders such as phenylketonuria (PKU), cystic fibrosis, and congenital hypothyroidism⁣
⭐️ The screen is a blood test that uses blood from a foot prick! The hole is slightly bigger than an adult blood glucose hole and the blood must fill all the circles on the test paper to be done⁣
⭐️This makes me SWEAT. (Tmi but just for the funs thought I’d share that lol)⁣
⁣
Did you know this was a thing Mother-Baby nurses did? Would you also sweat if you had to execute the blood in the circles perfectly 😂 ⁣
Let me know so I feel less weird about it 🙌🏽 Happy Tuesday!!

@lifewithleenrn I told y’all that as I was starting my role as a RN that I would tell you guys about what I’m learning so here’s me sticking to my word starting with Vital Signs! ⁣
⁣
HR: I count this first, I use my watch or the wall clock and count the beats for a full minute! To keep count (because their heart rates are way fast) I tap my finger on the crib so I can keep track even if they move or start crying or something wack 😂 ⁣
⁣
RR: 50% of the time I go to count RR I don’t have to move my stethoscope because I can hear their lungs so clearly already! However, if I can’t my next move is usually to press my stethoscope down on their bellies to count the rise and fall since babies breathe with their bellies! If that doesn’t work my last resort is the actual lung locations which I always check out at the end anyway to make sure lungs are CTAB (clear to auscultation bilaterally). ⁣
⁣
T: Do temp last! Babies hate it so much and often cry or squirm! So if you start with this you will hear nothing and get a high HR afterwords! This one is pretty straightforward 😊 ⁣
⁣
Was that helpful at all? If yes, let me know you like posts like this down below! I want to keep sharing as I go! Happy Wednesday friends! 👶🏼♥️
