@themaddiward TIPS FOR CHOOSING A NURSING SPECIALTY💉
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Choosing which nursing specialty is right for you can sometimes be tricky! Being a nurse can mean something different for everyone, since the world of nursing offers so many career avenues. I’ve complied my top tips below that helped me choose my own specialty and I hope they can offer you some assistance! Also, I would love to hear more tips from those of you who are specialized!!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌟Remember! Just because you pick one specialty doesn’t mean you have to stay there forever, or that you can’t change your mind. A major benefit to the profession is the ability to transition between specialities and continually learn something new!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌟Job Setting! Think about your life and what type of work environment you picture yourself in! Do you see yourself working bedside in the hosptial, assisting in a clinic, a M-F office, in a school, etc? Understanding where you want to be and how long you want your shifts to be, will help narrow down options!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌟Personal Interest! It’s important to think about what your interests are and what makes you feel the most excited! During nursing school what topic did you love to learn about most? And which topic did you find least interesting? I loved the heart so I hoped to work in a cardiac related unit one day! (And I’m glad I went for it because I still love the heart!) Also thinking about the age group that interests you is key!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌟Shadow! If you are interested in a certain type of nursing and wonder what it would be like to work there, ask the director if you can shadow for the day! Seeing first hand the nursing duties required will help you to better understand the specialty requirements and if you enjoy your time there. I always thought I wanted OR or ER, and after shadowing each unit I found myself most drawn to ICU!

@themaddiward Every season serves a purpose✨

I came across this quote on pinterest the other day, and had to write it down. I honestly felt it was exactly what I needed to hear. It’s not that I’m “unhappy” in my current stage of life, but I do find myself constantly planning for the next big thing and wishing for the future. As we begin a new week, I want to challenge myself to focus my mindset on embracing my current season of life, being thankful for all the opportunities I’ve been given, and being proud of the small goals I accomplish!

@themaddiward TIPS FOR CHANGE OF SHIFT REPORT📝
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Giving report to the oncoming nurse can sometimes be intimidating! Trying to organize your thoughts, the patient’s problems, all the interventions, and the goals can be overwhelming, but I hope these tips will help you feel more confident the next time the clock hits 0700 / 1900!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️ REPORT SHEET- Use a report sheet that makes sense to your brain! If it’s organized on a paper in front of you, you’re more likely to remember important details!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️ ALL ABOUT THE FLOW- Start with the patients name, age, code status, admitting diagnosis, and then go system by system! Don’t be this nurse: “the patient had a BM last night, and they have a right IJ triple lumen, also the CTA showed a PE”.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️ CHART REVIEW- Spend some time at the start of your shift reviewing the patients chart. Reading through the ER admission, consulting physicians, previous nurses, and other team member notes will help you to understand what has happened and what goals are in place!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️ PRACTICE- The more you listen to others give report and the more you practice giving report, the easier it will become!! You’ll get more comfortable with the terminology, you’ll find your own flow, and you’ll learn what key details are important!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
**** not related to report tips, but something in this photo is off and it makes me laugh. Be the first to guess what it is and you’ll win a little gift from me🤗

@themaddiward H’s & T’s 🔄
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My friend Little Anne and I wanted to share some info about H’s & T’s, a mnemonic used to determine causes of sudden cardiac arrest!

___The H’s___
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▪️Hypovolemia
The intravascular volume is low. Commonly seen in hemorrhaging/ dehydrated patients. To improve the issue, various fluids and/or blood products may be indicated.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▪️Hypoxia
Lack of oxygen circulating within the blood. Quickly resorting oxygen to the body is vital for cell and tissue survival.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▪️Hydrogen Ion Excess (Acidosis)
When a build up of hydrogen ions are present within the body, respiratory acidosis is typically seen. Proper ventilation is key for reversal.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▪️Hypokalemia/ Hyperkalemia
The heart has trouble functioning when potassium levels are both too high and too low. High K+ is typically seen as peaked T waves on an EKG, where low K+ typically results as flattened T waves and the presence of a U wave. Treatment involves medications to lower level or providing supplements for deficiencies.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▪️Hypothermia
When the core body temp is below 35° C (95° F), gradual rewarming is indicated for improved circulation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▪️Hypoglycemia
While it’s not an official H, it’s still important to consider treating low blood sugars in cardiac arrest reversal.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
___The T’s___
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▪️Tension Pneumothorax
When air builds up in the pleural cavity and
leads to a mediastinal shift. A thoracotomy must be performed to decompress the space.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▪️Tamponade
Cardiac tamponade is a build up of fluid within the pericardium, basically suffocating the heart. A pericardiocentesis must be performed to relive pressure.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▪️Toxins
Accidental or intentional overdoses of medications or chemicals. Reversal medications should be given.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▪️Thrombosis (PE & MI)
A Pulmonary Embolism is a clot that blocks the lung’s pulmonary artery and a Myocardial Infarction is a clot that blocks the heart’s coronary arteries. Fibrinolytics and PCI can be treatment options.

@themaddiward ACLS: Advanced Cardiac Life Support & BLS: Basic Life Support 😵🚨
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I may be off the unit and in the classroom today, but the skills I’m reviewing in class will benefit my performance at work! As an ICU nurse we often have to step into emergency situations, so it’s extremely important that I understand and utilize the ACLS and BLS techniques! Testing soon? Here’s a few tips! Any questions? Drop them in the comments!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💔 Study the Algorithms! These algorithms are the core foundation and will help guide your knowledge and testing! BLS, Cardiac Arrest, PEA, Asystole, Bradycardia, Tachycardia, Acute Coronary Syndrome, and Suspected Stroke!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💊 Know your pharmacology! What to give, when to give, and how much to give! For example: Epinephrine 1mg IVP can be give every 3-5 mins. Amiodarone 300mg IVP is given prior to the 150mg dose!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💻 Review case scenarios and take practice quizzes prior to attending class! Many websites offer them and the ACLS/ BLS books have links in them!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🗓 Remember to stay up to date with your renewals every 2 years!

Nothing important to say here, just wanted to wish you a happy 📅 !!

@themaddiward I’ve recently had many nursing students follow me during my shift, and honestly I love it! It wasn’t that long ago that I was that nursing student hoping to have a nice and informative nurse to shadow during my clinical rotations, so I’m trying my best to be that for someone else!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Tips for nursing students during their clinical rotations:
▪️Don’t be afraid to ask questions and be hands on, but also understand there are emergency moments when a patient’s condition doesn’t allow the nurse to immediately teach. When things settle and the patient is stable, feel free to debrief with the nurse!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▪️Help those around you. Teamwork plays a huge role in a successful shift, and even as a student you are part of the team!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▪️ Bring a notebook or paper to write down things you want to look up later, then actually look them up! A medication you don’t know? A procedure you haven’t heard about? A disease process you want to learn more about?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▪️Thank the nurse and ask for their email/ contact info. When the time comes for job interviews and letter of recommendations, clinical rotation nurses are great resources! I’ve written a few letters of rec for students!
