@toristable I want to see you love your food. Everyone deserves that 🙌🏼. It may not seem possible to pursue health AND an unrestricted diet of foods you love. But it is! ⠀
⠀
Try asking yourself these quick questions while you make your food choices: ⠀
⠀
•does the flavor/texture/smell of this food appeal to me? ⠀
•would I be making this choice if there were no one else around to see it? ⠀
•am I making this choice out of a desire to alter my body?⠀
⠀
Whatever your answers, no judgement. Just take note, and see how it feels. ⠀
⠀
Let me know if you ever ask yourself these questions (or others)! ⠀

@toristable Real talk: diet foods suck. ⠀
⠀
Anyone who has spent time dieting, logging, and tracking will know there are certain foods that can help you ‘meet your goals’. ⠀
⠀
You’ve probably bought them at some point, these barely recognizable foodstuffs, and convinced yourself they were ‘good enough’. ⠀
⠀
Maybe you’ve bought the baked chips that offer a hint of potato, the most intense green juice (no apple allowed cuz carbs), or the high protein cookie with the unsatisfying texture and chocolate-ish chips. I could go on and on!⠀
⠀
But at some point you likely stopped eating those foods, and you now have a half bag of rice cakes in the back of your cupboard. You went back to eating foods you ENJOY, and likely even over-indulged on them because you were just SO relieved to be in the presence of a real potato chip again. ⠀
⠀
What if you didn’t do that anymore? What if instead, you: ⠀
⠀
• Explored food to find out what you *really* like to eat and cook⠀
⠀
• Selected only foods you actually enjoy, and...⠀
⠀
• Some of those foods had health benefits ⠀
⠀
Now there’s a sustainable eating strategy... ⠀

@toristable True story: I haven’t always been been a fruit eater 🤷🏽‍♀️ I ate it a lot as a kid, but as an adult I never would seek it out. Now, after a few recipe development projects for work (fruit smoothies and popsicles), I came to find that there are a few I do want to have in my rotation! In the spirit of food exploration, here are my top 5 favorite fruits from a former non-fruit eater!
Are there any foods you never thought you’d like that you now enjoy?? I’d love to know!

5. 🍒🍑 Stone fruits! Summer is definitely my favorite fruit season- do you prefer peaches or nectarines?? 4. 🍊🍋 Citrus is one of my most commonly used fruits, especially for adding flavor and sharpness in cooking. Usually, if a dish is tasting a little flat, a squeeze of lemon or lime will give it some perk!

3. Mango. I remember watching my Aunt cut these as a kid - along the pit, then scoring each side and turning it inside out. I still think this is the best way for cutting them!

2. 🍉 Watermelon. Nothing better on a hot day than cold, crisp watermelon. Literally nothing. Don’t try to argue it.
1. Berries: specifically 🍓Strawberries & BOYSENBERRIES- have you ever tried one? Growing up in San Diego we had boysenberry vines all along our house and during the season my hands would be permanently stained purple from picking and eating them! As an adult I once paid $22 for a jar of boysenberry jam because I was so excited to see them! 😂

@toristable There are a few new faces around so I wanted to say hello and tell you a little about myself and where I’m at these days! ⠀
•⠀
My name is Tori, and I’m a dietitian. My areas of specialty are culinary nutrition and exercise physiology/sports nutrition. ⠀
•⠀
I am also a regular human being 😂. I struggle with the same things a lot of people do - weight and body image, guilt and shame around food, desire to look a certain way. ⠀
•⠀
I’ve recently been taking a hard look at the life I’m cultivating and whether or not it’s the life I really want. I’m starting to work on some long-standing habits that have kept me from being honest with myself about what really makes me happy.⠀
•⠀
The more I try to connect with what makes me happiest, the more I find almost none of those things have to do with being a particular pant size. It’s all well and good to say ‘I’m throwing my body image issues out the window!’ but it’s not simple to do. •⠀
Nobody trusts a health professional who doesn’t ‘look fit’ (which is actually not a thing you call tell by appearance). And it’s hard to silence the voice in my head that tells me I’m not good enough unless I look a certain way. Recently though, I’ve had a thought...
•⠀
What if instead of going back to the same cycle of dieting over and over, I put that emotional energy, time, money, and effort I have into cultivating a happier life, not a smaller body. Sounds pretty good to me!⠀
•⠀
Happiness for me seems to come from being in a career that supports and challenges me, having emotionally healthy and loving relationships, nurturing my passion for food and cooking, and kicking my own ass at the gym because I love to exercise.⠀
•⠀
I’m choosing a more ‘intuitive eating’ approach because I realized that I genuinely care about health over weight, happiness over thinness and love over guilt and shame. I’ll see where my own gut takes me! And I’d love to have you along for the ride as I explore what this framework has to offer for both myself and my clients.

There are a few new faces around so I wanted to say hello and tell you...

@toristable Sometimes you just need to check out.... 💆🏽‍♀️ As we become more aware of the challenging diet/body image/perfection - related messages around us, the question becomes “how do we tune it out?” This past weekend I got to spend some time in the beach with a good friend and a good book. It gave me a break from all the noise - all types of it. And it was much-needed.
I know the beach sounds like an odd place to lose track of diet culture (beach body hello) but getting caught up in a book is 👌🏼for me.
I would love to know some ways that you unplug! How do you specifically build up resiliency to the messages that can tear us down. ❤️ #dietitianhq @dietitianhq #rdentrepreneur #intuitiveeating #resiliency #unplug #beach #hamptons #nedpg #summerreading

@toristable Oh, what a (5 years) it has been!

Next week I will celebrate the FIVE YEAR MARK of becoming an RD.
Something I often say is ‘if you had told me this is what I’d be doing when I went to get my masters, I would not have believed you’. I’m in a very different place than I ever anticipated, but I’m certain I made the right choice in career path. In that spirit, I wanted to share 5 things that I’ve learned since I set out on this path over 10 years ago!
1. Sometimes what you want isn’t the best thing for you. I’m so glad I went after what I wanted - the program, the location- but I’m just as happy that I was open to the unexpected when it came to my internship and career path. I landed in an area I never really knew existed and it’s been such a great fit for me!

2. Say yes to things before you know you can handle it. You will rise to the occasion, and there are plenty of people saying yes with less qualifications and experience than you. Doesn’t mean it won’t be scary, and you won’t screw up, but get in there and just start. 🤪

3. Enjoy the process. Sometimes I think I was in such a hurry to just BE an RD that I didn’t totally relish the years of my education and all the learning taking place. I miss it, and now really enjoy conferences and other learning opportunities but it’s not the same!
4. Learn as much as you can. I get mocked openly by my coworkers and friends for how many questions I ask and my ‘extreme note taking’ but 🤷🏽‍♀️ I love to learn and I’m never going to stop being a knowledge sponge. It’s partly what makes me good at my job.

5. Have fun with it. Sometimes I get so locked into how serious health can be that I also forget the fun part. For me, that’s the food and cooking, the experimenting, the mess-making.
This 5th year feels like a major #milestone and I’m happy to have you all to share it with ❤️ A huge thank you to my family and friends, I would not be in this place without you guys.

Any #rd2be out there getting ready to take their #rdexam ?

@toristable Weekday 🏃🏽‍♀️vs Weekend 💤

Morning routines vary a lot for me day to day with my job, work and personal travel, and down time. I would love to be able to tell you that the picture on the right is from a weekday, but it isn’t. .

Weekdays for me are usually hitting snooze one too many times, rushing out the door and grabbing a coffee on my way to work. .

Weekend mornings are a different story. I LOVE making breakfast, especially when I have fun, seasonal ingredients to play with. .

If I’m being honest, I wish I had a more leisurely morning routine so I could make breakfast, take my time getting ready for the day and not feel rushed or stressed. But that’s not me and never has been! .
Maybe someday but for now, just give me 5 more minutes of sleep, my coffee and a podcast to listen to 😂. .
Tell me 👇🏼 What’s your favorite part of your morning routine?? .

@toristable Summertime PSA ☀️ It is NOT required that foods have some perceived health value for them to be enjoyable and worth eating. 🍦
You don’t have to suffer through some “frozen-whipped-protein-sorry-excuse-for-an-ice-cream” when the real thing is what you actually want.
🍦
Your cravings are valid, and the more you let yourself acknowledge and act on them, the less you’ll feel guilt and shame about eating those “forbidden foods”, the less you will ultimately overeat them when you do have them. 🍦
Stop the cycle. Eat the ice cream.

@toristable A day in the life! I’ll let you in on a secret... I have a day job. 👉🏼 Aside from working on Tori’s Table, I work full time as the Director of Wellness for a food service company.
Ok, but what does that mean?

I oversee about 160 unique accounts where we run food service outlets in corporate dining, museums and cultural centers. This means cafes, coffee bars, restaurants, juice bars, you name it we probably serve it.
In my role, I oversee our wellness platform and standards, nutrition analysis and labeling, wellness promotions, nutrition education initiatives, and many other things.
There is no ‘normal day’ for me, I travel around our many accounts (from Boston to DC to NY to Chicago to Atlanta) and help our accounts get their wellness programs up and running.
I work on the culinary team to make sure recipes we create are analyzed for nutrition information (no easy task) and that our menus are balanced with options for our guests.

Along the way I also get to work directly with our guests and clients, sometimes serving food, giving cooking demos and nutrition talks, or creating content to support the HR departments of our client orgs.
Some days are a lot more glamorous than others though, let me tell ya. I frequently have days of back to back conference calls, data entry and spreadsheets. Plenty of days I just have to focus on supporting the team in front if me and literally stock chips and fill beverage coolers and help clean.
Food is an incredible space to work in and and I wanted to share it with you - so you know some of where my expertise is coming from and how very real my love and appreciation of food is.
So many dietitians out there know their stuff about nutrition, but knowing nutrition and FOOD is a game changer.
Swipe right for some real pics of me doin my thing, and props to anyone who knows the movie quoted in the last one!!! 👉🏼👉🏼 @dietitianhq #dietitianhq #rdentrepreneur #nutritionentrepreneur #nedog #dbcdpg #dietitian #foodservice #culinarynutrition #chef #culinary #nutrition #healthy #eat #eathealthy #cooking

@toristable After yesterday’s post about the importance of messages we hear daily, I thought it might be a good to post some voices I love. Here are a few of my favorite non-fiction reads right now:⠀
⠀
1. Intuitive Eating by Elyse Resch and Evelyn Tribole @evelyntribole ⠀
In their own words, a “self care eating framework” as an “antidote to dieting to help people heal their relationship with food”. It calls out diet culture with a voice that needs to be heard and when I read it I honestly felt like I got hit by a truck it was so spot on! ⠀
⠀
2. Salt Fat Acid Heat by Samin Nosrat ⠀
You may have seen the Netflix special, but this book by @ciaosamin is amazing. A beautiful celebration of food and cooking, with some great “how” and a lot of “why” behind great food. Not to mention her personality and passion, which really come through in the audiobook. I loved it (and also got CEUs for reading it!)
⠀
3. Healthy Eating for Life: An Intuitive Eating Workbook to Stop Dieting Forever by Cara Harbstreet ⠀
This is a great piece for anyone who is looking to use intuitive eating strategies into their real life. And if you don’t follow @streetsmart.rd do it now. She’s funny, sharp and her messaging is on point. ⠀
⠀
I hope you love these reads as much as I do- I think they represent a great approach to loving food and loving life. ⠀

After yesterday’s post about the importance of messages we hear daily,...

@toristable I’ll be the first to admit that if you put 2 identical products in front of me, I’m picking the one in the prettier packaging 😂 but lately I’ve become hyper aware of the messaging that brands and ads are throwing at me - all of it saying ‘buy this because you’re not good/pretty/calm enough’. ⠀
⠀
It truly feels like I’m surrounded by it, and while all of it is repulsive, I find it most offensive in the wellness and fitness space. So many groups are selling an ideal of physical, mental, emotional and even spiritual perfection...if only you just buy this.
⠀
Now I know this is nothing new but I find this strategy pretty repulsive (with a special place in hell reserved for the supplement industry). And it makes me sad to know that they wouldn’t be doing it if it wasn’t effective for sales.
I wonder how aware we really are when it comes to the marketing we take in? And how much do we really let it influence us?⠀
⠀
So this is my reminder to you: you are enough, right now, without that 30 day diet challenge, without the flat tummy tea. Without losing ‘just those last 5 pounds’. 👈🏼⠀
⠀
I’d love to hear from you if there are any particular brands or spaces where you feel this is common. Or, on the flip side, any that you feel are out there promoting themselves without these tactics! 🙌🏼 drop it in the comments!

I’ll be the first to admit that if you put 2 identical products in fro...
