#gardeninghistory Instagram Hashtag - One of the reasons I’m so fascinated with history, especially when I’m learning a new subject, but just in general, is that the more I know about where we come from, the more I can try to understand where we are, for better and worse. It can be affirming to find out how some distorted, creepy things do change, so in that respect it gives me courage for the future. • This 1947 Women’s Home Companion Garden Book, which has some interesting color plates, mostly for the effect of old printing inks, is otherwise disturbing for several reasons:
1) The Forward, written by a woman for women readers, uses only the pronoun “he.” It also makes very specific religious assumptions. (And likely has race and economic class assumptions as well.) But the excerpt that freaks me out most and best indicates how we’ve gotten into this environmental & social mess is: “Plants inhabited the earth countless generations before man appeared. They have been man’s to choose and to adapt, and to modify to his liking. Not yet does man know the numbers and kinds upon the earth... but at last he begins to apply science and to have dominion.” 🤯🤯🤯 2) There are pervasive suggestions for use of DDT as an insecticide, which had just become available to the US public in 1945. This is notable for two reasons. We now know the devastating environmental and health impacts of DDT. (Orca still have DDT built up in their tissue and pass it on to their young, even though it was banned in 1972.) And we’re just starting to understand the critical importance of native insects to local ecosystems, so killing off the insects in our gardens, though still widely practiced, is hopefully on its way out.
3) There are almost entirely foreign ornamental plants included in these pages, cementing an image in the American gardener’s mind about how their yard should look that still reverberates in every mainstream garden center to this day. • #gardenhistory #gardeninghistory

I thought I knew quite a bit about the home front and digging for victory, but this was a real eye opener about the sheer amount of work and political bargaining that went into getting both small, individual victory gardens and enormous commercial gardens up and running through six years of war. Genuinely engrossing social history. (PS - if you know what to do with a swede beyond hiding it in a soup, please let me know!)

.
#gardeninghistory Instagram Hashtag - Sunday morning gardening book review. 🌻📖
This is my gardening bible. I gave it as a gift many years ago to my Dad who was a keen vegetable gardener. His gardening advice is still in my ears. Actually Robert often says I sound just like my dad 🤭🤓
Originally published as Your Kitchen Garden, London, 1976.
Published 1978 in Australia by Edenlite, Blues Point Road, North Sydney. Adapted for Australian gardens by Bruce Farquhar.
There’s a lot I love about Your Vegetable Garden in Australia. Firstly a connection with a loved one long since passed. Then the fact it’s packed full of detail on preparing and getting the best from the veggie garden.
There’s a fascinating history lesson for each vegetable section.
The illustrations and photographs are delightful with an honesty you don’t often see in gardening books e.g. freshly picked carrots still covered in soil. Nine artists and five photographers are credited along with three picture libraries.
The quotes accompanying each recipe section are curious. Under Carrots: “Both seed and root are ... good against the biting of Venomous Beadts, Wind, and rising of Mother.” The English Herbal by William Salmon, M.D., 1710.
Well you can’t argue with that 😂
This is a practical, well authored, researched and adapted gardening bible. ❤️🌺

#gardeninghistory Instagram Hashtag - This sculpture installation @westgateoxford is William Cobbings’ ‘Paradise Garden’, which was the name of the land there granted to friars by King Henry III in 1224. In the early 1700s the friars’ orchard gave way to a plant nursery, owned by Thomas Wrench, the ‘best kitchen gardener in England’. When he died, his apprentice Thomas Tagg took over the business and also married his former master’s widow! The Taggs kept their Paradise Gardens nursery for several generations.
My ancestors were also gardeners in St Aldate’s at that time - the owners of ‘Treadwell’s Market Garden’ - and the Tagg and Treadwell gardening families were united through marriage. 🌳🌷💍
They both sold off large parts of land for housing development in the 1800s.
It’s good to see this echo from the area’s past but I wish I could have seen Paradise Gardens when it was filled with trees, plants and flowers.

#gardeninghistory Instagram Hashtag - In Gervase Markham’s “The English Housewife” (1615), he suggests a certain gardening calendar based on time of year, month, and moon, in which all herbs are to be sown. Starting with “In February, in the new moon, she may sow spike, garlic, borage, bugloss, chervil, coriander, gourds, cresses, marjoram, palma Christi, flower-gentle, white poppy, purslane, radish, rocket, rosemary, sorrel, double marigolds, and thyme.” Michael Best in his edited version of the book, notes that Markham likely took this information from an earlier French work and thus the gardening advice may be more appropriate to the French housewife and the French climate. Nonetheless, it’s a lovely listing grounding us in the cycles of time and season.

John Haws of Clapton, London, was, by his own admission, quite the disastrous gardener! Ironic, we know! Over 130 years later, the design essentially remains untouched.

#gardeninghistory Instagram Hashtag - Introducing our #plantofthemoment the Heteromeles arbutifolia. Commonly known as Toyon, these native trees were once very plentiful on the foothills overlooking the Pueblo de Los Angeles. During the winter season, their berries ripen to the cheerful bright red that you see here. As Victorian florists paired the Toyon’s seasonal berries with the leaves of the Coast Live Oak and the Holly Leaved Cherry, the Toyon came to be known as the California Holly. Fun fact: In 1887, at his wife’s request, a land developer named Wilcox changed the name of his subdivision near the Cahuenga Pass. Thus, those Toyon-rich hills became known as the Hollywood Hills. You can find the Rancho’s Toyon greeting you as you walk up the pathway to enter the site today for public hours from 1-5.

_______________________________________________

Some like it hot! That’s certainly the case for this tropical Hibiscus, which is native to Africa. The recent weeks of heat have triggered another wave of fall blooms. The plant’s Latin name may seem a mouthful, but when broken down into its constituent parts the name actually describes this lovely flower perfectly (schizo = split; petalus = divided). Visitors can find these clambering shrubs in the backyard in the shade of the Coral Tree. The flowers dangle from arching branches allowing for easy viewing. The coloring is a red with pale markings with tremendous variation for individual flowers.

The Rancho’s 1931 landscape plan (drawn by Ralph Cornell for Avis and Llewellyn Bixby) designated space for “Yucca from old garden” in the southwest corner of the forecourt, an area designed to accommodate the Bixby guests’ automobiles. The reference to “old garden” was intriguing, since Cornell’s plans are the earliest mention of the Yucca at RLC that we have seen.
The Yucca’s creamy white flowers are in bloom right now and may carry on through to the end of October. Even out of bloom, this plant adds a striking textural accent to the space and it is a venerable element from the garden’s early history.

#gardeninghistory Instagram Hashtag - Latergram - from the archive, 2017. Found this iPhone snap last night.
I recorded a lot of the building work and construction of the new Welcome Building for the RHS at Wisley, which was started in 2017. This panel was nailed to the wall of the Victorian stable block, which stood near to where the entrance desks are now. An architect/historian advised on any demolition, and features with historical significance were saved. Maybe the photos will appear in a feature at some point.
Not sure who fixed this to the wall, but it was certainly apt.

#gardeninghistory Instagram Hashtag - Today RLC proudly shares its Plant of the Moment, the Crape Myrtle.
_______________________________________________

When RLC lost the historic Arborvitae that once graced its backyard (back in the 1960s), it was replaced it with Crape Myrtle. While not part of Ralph Cornell’s original landscape design for Llewellyn and Avis Bixby’s 1930s garden, Crape Myrtles do fit nicely with Cornell’s other flowering trees. Since the City had a second Crape Myrtle to spare, another was planted between the Wisteria arbor and the brick wall that borders the private garden. Their show of bright pink should extend deep into the summer and early fall.

#gardeninghistory Instagram Hashtag - Are your veggies growing? There is something really therapeutic about pulling weeds (with a glass of wine).
.
This is an activity that has been practiced for eons, and I love the simple connection with something from the past. Did garden tenders of the past sometimes leave a weed thinking it was a plant? Or visa versa. I reckon I did. Did they have a cup of wine or some other fermented drink? . Did they soak in the sunshine and watch the birds? I hope so. I hope watching veggies grow was as enjoyable for them then as it is for me now.

#gardeninghistory Instagram Hashtag - Today #RanchoLosCerritos Today RLC proudly shares its Plant of the Moment, the Monch Aster.
This popular hybrid resulted from Carl Ludwig Frikart (1879-1964) crossing two species back in the 1920s, and the plant’s 2.5” lavender-blue flowers have been pleasing gardeners ever since.
Located near the Lantana in the Rancho’s shade garden (AKA Avis’ cutting garden, in the north end of the site’s backyard), the Monch Aster’s blooms delight RLC visitors in the late summer and fall, then the plant goes dormant in the winter before regenerating in late spring. 🌸

#gardeninghistory Instagram Hashtag - Carrots in a barrow....
.
All my recent frolicking in the garden has turned thoughts to cheery, hopeful things, like soil, and renewal and, well, wheelbarrows. One of the things I so enjoy about drawing objects of daily life is that it forces a body to get to know things one THOUGHT one knew. Putting the humble wheelbarrow onto a blank page shows the humble artist that a barrow is a geometrically complex creature, tapering this way and that way, and again THAT way. It is enough to confound a mathematician, surely. This simple tool turns out to be a Highly Evolved Work of Great Sophistication, tuned by the ages to its special purpose. Thoughts turn to the long history of gardens, and the symbiotic evolution of plants and people, the one shaping the other shaping the one shaping the other and round and round again.

There’s also of course all the amazing girl-gardeners on Insta who inspire me every day. This year I’m re-reading two books by the legendary #margaryfish to mark the occasion. As she says: “Gardening is like everything else in life, you get out of it as much as you put in. No one can make a garden by buying a few packets of seeds or doing an afternoon’s weeding. You must love it and then your love will be repaid a thousandfold.” Another awesome quote from Margary: “the watering was usually done after dinner, and those were the days when one donned a long dress and satin slippers for this social occasion.” I think we should all be doing evening watering in long dresses and satin slippers! As well as making appearances in Christian legend, Greek Mythology and history, it also has it's roots firmly planted in superstition! If your cow had been jinxed by the local witch then a chunk of Hellebore root in it's ear could fix that problem, plus growing Hellebore by your front door was guaranteed to keep that witch from coming back for round two. This might not have worked very well though, as it's said witches used the plant for curses, blighting land, invisibility and summoning demons. *WARNING: If you choose one of these beauties for your own garden, please remember that they are poisonous to both humans and animals and, if swallowed, may kill.
